The Vancouver School District is an exciting and dynamic school district which offers a wide range of opportunities for more than 50,000 learners from Kindergarten to adult.  Our diverse School District employs almost 9,000 employees which are represented by 14 bargaining units as well as exempt management staff. The District operates 77 Elementary schools, 18 Secondary schools, 13 Annexes, 8 District Schools (leased or district program sites), 6 District Support Facilities and 3 properties on which businesses operate, for 125 active facilities. We are seeking an experienced Director of Facilities to lead and manage all aspects of facility operations, including the maintenance and renovation of buildings and grounds, building services and long range capital planning.

 

Reporting directly to the Secretary Treasurer you are a member of the District Management Team.  You have a recognized degree in engineering, facility planning, architecture, or similar discipline along with extensive experience in a senior management position, preferably in the public sector.

 

Your strong interpersonal and communication skills are imperative for connecting with school administrators, district staff, legislative bodies, local governments, community representatives, the Vancouver Project Office, and external professional contacts. Your considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of facilities management will assist you in managing the Maintenance & Construction, Building Operations and Grounds departments.  Your sound judgement is always exercised to ensure work is in accordance with applicable legislation and statutes.  Your facility planning expertise will assist you in identifying requirements for new school capacity and to optimize existing school capacity.

 

Other duties include being a member of various district committees, presenting facility matters to the senior management team, being the lead for the Board of Education’s Facilities Planning Committee, and liaising with City of Vancouver and Vancouver Park board representatives.

 

The successful candidate must be:

  • proficient with Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, and Teams and have strong report writing skills
  • familiar with education facilities and related public sector issues and have knowledge of the issues and practices related to the use of school facilities and grounds
  • able to read and understand building drawings and specifications
  • able to communicate effectively and to establish and maintain effective working relationship with co-workers, school and maintenance staff and consultants.
